Day

TREKKING TO LAGUNA HUMANTAY

Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa - Humantay Lake - Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

  • Drive from Cusco to Soraypampa for 3 hours.

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

This tour starts picking up passengers between 4:30 and 5:00 from their hotels. After collecting all group, you and the group will drive for 2 hours to Mollepata village where you will enjoy an energetic breakfast relax your legs. Then you will have some time to use toilets and get the chance to buy the last things you might forget to buy in Cusco like water, snacks or others. Then you will continue one more hour with the van until the starting spot Soraypampa.

The tour guide will provide all information and recommendations to start the hike to Lake Humantay. On the way, you can see the mountains and scenic views. The thawing of the snow creates a fantastic landscape of this Lagoon. You will learn about this area and take the best photos with your guide.

After visiting Humantay Lake Peru, you will descend to Soraypampa to enjoy a delicious lunch cooked for our chef and restaurant team.

After finishing lunch and relaxing after your trek, you will continue with the van to Ollantaytambo for 3 hours approximately.

 In Ollantaytambo, according to availability, you will take the train to Aguas Calientes for around 1 hour 45 minutes. When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, your tour guide will be waiting for you at the train station to take you to the restaurant for dinner. Then you will go to the Hotel in Aguas Calientes and sleep for the next day.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

You will wake up early to have breakfast and take the bus to Machu Picchu; It will take around 30 minutes to reach the main gate Machu Picchu. Once you arrive at Machu Picchu, you will meet with your Tour Guide to start the tour inside Machu Picchu. Your Tour Guide will explain and teach about the function, history, construction, and more about Machu Picchu. Also, you will have time to take the best pictures of this beautiful wonder world.

Once you finish enjoying Machu Picchu, you will return to Aguas Calientes, walking around 45 minutes or taking the bus for USD 12.

Then, you will have time to visit and explore Aguas Calientes Town or maybe go to hot springs. Also, there are many restaurants, hotels, and bars where you can relax for the afternoon before boarding your respective train.

In the afternoon, according to availability, you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo for 1 hour 45 minutes. Then the transfer or driver will be waiting for you to take you back to Cusco.

  • You have to climb 2.4 miles (4 km) to reach the Lake. All participants must be in good physical condition for this trek.
  • If you need to rent a horse for any reason, please be aware that the agency does not manage the rental and will not be involved in the process.
  • The operator is not responsible for changes in climate conditions during your tour. It’s recommended to obtain more details about the meteorological conditions through applications or another method and then select the most favorable departure day concerning the functionality of this query.

Where is Humantay lake located in Peru?

The Humantay lagoon is located 77 miles or 125 kilometers from the city of Cusco and one hour from the town of Mollepata to the northwest, right between the imposing Salkantay and Humantay mountains. 

Is Humantay Lake open?

Humantay lake was closed on March 16, 2020, because of the covid -19 regulations and lockdown. It was reopened on March 15, 2021, with covid 19 restrictions which were set up by the local municipality and the Peruvian government. Since this time, Humantay has been open until today; however, there are some protocols that people need to follow to enjoy this majestic area.

How hard is the hike to Humantay Lake?

Humantay Lake hike itself it is not challenging, but the altitude can make the difference; it is recommended that people get in good physical condition to attempt this day trek.

How long is a Machu Picchu from Humantay lake?

There are two ways to arrive at Machu Picchu from Humantay Lake. First is by Humantay Lake to Machu Picchu by bus and train in 2 days tour from Cusco, and the classic Salkantay trek five days trek. 

How high is Salkantay Pass?

The beautiful scenic view of Salkantay’s pass altitude is at 14225 ft (4650 metros) about the sea level. It is the principal pass to go from the area of Mollepata to the high forest of Santa Teresa – Machu Picchu.

Do you visit Salkantay pass with this tour?

Salkantay pass is about 9 miles(14 km) round trip to Soraypampa, and there is not enough time to do it in just one day.

On the first day, you will visit Humantay Lagoon with a roundtrip trek of 4.8 miles (8 km) for half-day, and the other half-day, you will need to go to Aguas Calientes. That’s why there is not enough time to visit other areas that are not mentioned in the itinerary. 

Do I need to bring my original passport on the Humantay and Machu Picchu Tour?

It is not mandatory to show a passport for the first day of this tour and visit Humantay Lake. Still, According to the Peruvian regulation, it is mandatory to bring your original passport to get to Machu Picchu.

It would be best not to forget your passport for Humantay and Machu Picchu trip.
