The trip started with the fresh air of the morning in Cusco. We were picked up at the hotel, and soon, we were on our way to the train station in Poroy, which we reached in about 30 minutes. The station was surrounded by mountains, and you could see travelers excited about an adventure that would be unique. The spotless trains and the smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air with a special vibe.

The panoramic train was an absolute delight. Through its large windows, you could see green fields, mountains covered in vegetation, and the Urubamba River meandering beside us like a faithful companion. There were times when we passed through small villages where you could see some locals grazing. The train staff was very friendly. They offered us drinks, typical snacks, and more experiences that you will have to discover.

We arrived in Aguas Calientes. The trip took approximately 3 hours. Getting there was like entering another world. The town has cobblestone streets, several craft stalls and cafes, and is surrounded by mountains, some of which are covered in fog. The very friendly guide directed us to the hotel.

With the afternoon free, we decided to explore a little more:

Mandor Falls

It is a walk of approximately one hour, during which you will appreciate beautiful landscapes, the famous orchids, and even some wild animals.

Thermal Baths

It is located 15 or 20 minutes’ walking from any point in the town of Aguas Calientes, making it perfect for relaxing and recharging your batteries.

Hike

The hike from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu will require a physical challenge, and you will have to start before 4:30 a.m. (If you choose this option, inform the agency and your guide in advance.)

The second day started before the sun came up. After a light breakfast, we headed to the bus station. The wait was full of excitement. We opted to take the bus to save energy, although several enthusiastic travelers started the hike very early.

Arriving at Machu Picchu was like a dream come true. As we continued along the trail, the Inca citadel revealed itself through the mist as if the past were emerging to tell us its story. The first glimpse was indescribable: perfectly aligned terraces, imposing temples, and a feeling of being in a truly special place.

The guided tour was fascinating. The guide told us some secrets, like the Intihuatana, a stone that the Incas used to measure time and connect with the cosmos, and the Temple of the Condor, whose architecture reflects this civilization’s respect for nature. The guide not only told us about the history but also about the spiritual beliefs that made this place a unique ceremonial center.

After the tour, we had time to explore on our own. We explored areas with fewer crowds, where the energy of the place seemed more palpable. Some group members climbed Huayna Picchu, where they enjoyed a spectacular view of the citadel. In contrast, others opted for Machu Picchu Mountain, known for its imposing height and unforgettable panoramas.

After we visited Machu Picchu, we returned to Aguas Calientes. Before boarding the train back, we had a few minutes to explore the craft market, where we found unique souvenirs such as textiles, silver jewelry, and stone carvings.

The train ride back was the perfect time to reflect on what we had experienced. As the landscape passed by the window, we shared anecdotes with other travelers and reviewed our photos. Finally, we arrived in Cusco, tired but happy, knowing we had been part of an unforgettable experience.

Tips for your trip

Photographic recommendations

The panoramic train is an unparalleled visual experience. Sit near the windows to capture spectacular views of the valley and mountains and catch details like small waterfalls, agricultural terraces, and birds perching near the Urubamba River. Also, bring a microfiber cloth to clean the lens of your camera or cell phone, as the morning humidity could fog it up.

At Machu Picchu, the best times to photograph are at dawn, when the first rays of sunlight illuminate the citadel, and around midday, when the clouds usually clear and offer clearer views. Don’t forget to explore different angles, such as the lower terraces, which offer unique perspectives of the archaeological site.

Hiking Tips

Although this tour does not include long or technical hikes, it is essential to be prepared for short hiking sections, such as the tours in Machu Picchu and Mandor waterfalls. Here are some tips:

  • Appropriate footwear: Opt for lightweight shoes with good grip. Although the trails are not complicated, they can be wet or slippery, especially near the falls.
  • Hydration and snacks: Bring a reusable water bottle and light snacks like nuts or energy bars. Eating is prohibited in Machu Picchu, but you can do so before entering.
  • Frequent breaks: If you decide to walk to the entrance of Machu Picchu instead of taking the bus, remember that it is a constant climb of approximately 1 hour and a half. Take it easy, take breaks to enjoy the views, and breathe deeply to adjust to the altitude.
  • Sun protection: Although most of the trail is shaded, the sun in the Andean region can be intense. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Moving photography: If you explore on foot, take advantage of the trails to take more dynamic photos, such as the Inca steps or the viewpoints you find.

Restaurants and food in Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes offers a wide range of gastronomic options for all tastes and budgets. If you want a memorable culinary experience, some restaurants stand out for their cozy atmosphere and carefully prepared dishes.

For pizza lovers, some establishments have wood-fired ovens that give a unique flavor to this international classic. Other restaurants focus on Peruvian-international fusion, incorporating local ingredients in pasta, risottos, or ceviches.

The Aguas Calientes market is an excellent alternative if you prefer a more affordable option. Here, you will find homemade and abundant dishes at affordable prices. Menus usually include a starter, a main course, and a drink, with options such as ají de gallina, lomo saltado, or galleries con estofado. The atmosphere is less formal but authentic, with establishments run by local families.

Another tip is to try coca or muña tea wherever you eat. These infusions help with digestion and are ideal for combating altitude sickness.

Moments of Calm

Amid the excitement of exploring Machu Picchu, stop and connect with your surroundings for a few minutes. Find a quiet spot, such as one of the agricultural terraces or a less-crowded corner, to observe and listen. You’ll feel the energy of the place, the birdsong, the sound of the wind, and, if you’re lucky, the echo of your thoughts. It’s a moment to reflect and appreciate how incredibly advanced the Incan people were.

Special souvenirs

At the end of your tour, don’t miss the handicraft market in Aguas Calientes. Here, you’ll find unique treasures like handmade textiles, bracelets, necklaces with local stones, and miniature replicas of Machu Picchu. There are also high-quality alpaca products and locally grown coffee. If you’re looking for a more personalized souvenir, some artisans can even engrave your name or a special date on their pieces.

The most important tip is to take the time to explore the market and talk to the vendors. Often, they will tell you stories about the origin of their products, which gives even more special value to your purchase.
