How does Ruta Montana Machu Picchu work?

Ruta Montana Machu Picchu was designed specifically to take you to a spot suitable for extraordinary pictures. It’s even higher than Machu Picchu, which makes it an exceptional location to explore. That being said, Ruta Montana can be a tad difficult to reach if you’re not in a good shape. So a bit of hiking experience and a proper hiking shape can help.

When you embark in the Ruta Montana Machu Picchu, you will go through the following:

  • From the Machu Picchu entrance you want to follow the upper trail heading towards the Guardhouse.
  • There are dedicated signs that showcase the start of the Ruta Montana Machu Picchu. The start is on the same path towards the Sun gate. However, after a few minutes, you have to turn right and then follow the path that goes up to the agricultural terracing.
  • You will have to hike for 15 more minutes, and then you will be reaching the warden’s hut. That’s where you must sign in and show your entrance ticket and passport.
  • Once you handle that, you will go on an ascent for around an hour, this is quite difficult since you have a 30-35 degree angle. You’re dealing with a higher altitude, but the surrounding mountains are visually stunning, so the trip itself is quite impressive.
  • There are rest points along the way, so you can use them in case you feel sick or just out of breath.
  • When you continue ascending, those steps are steeper and steeper. These locations will be more narrow, so you need to be extremely careful here. After 30 minutes of climbing, you will go through a stone gateway, and then you follow the mountain ridge and reach the summit.
  • When you reach the top, there’s a round hut where you have seating and shelter. Now you can enjoy the views of the Putucusi, Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu as well.

Is the Ruta Montana Machu Picchu trek difficult?

Due to the altitude and steepness in some areas, the trek is known for being moderate and even challenging in some cases. That’s why you need adequate training and a good fitness level in general if you want to tackle this particular trek. However, it will be worth it once you reach the top, since the views are very spectacular.

If you enter the Ruta Montana Machu Picchu during the wet season, that adds an extra degree of difficulty. The trail can get very slippery and that means it’s harder to traverse. Since the locations can be very narrower at times, the route is not ideal for someone that has a fear of heights. The steepness, combined with high altitude does require you to focus on your health as much as possible as you prepare for the ascent.

The best time to go on Ruta Montana Machu Picchu

You can go to Ruta Montana Machu Picchu during the entire year. However, it’s a good idea to avoid the wet season unless you have very good equipment. The Dry season, from May to October, tends to be the ideal time to visit this place. Even then, the humidity is 40%, but during the wet season it can go up to 65%. That being said, you do want to trek during the early morning, since you have better ways to protect yourself from UV lights.

Engaging onto the Ruta Montana Machu Picchu trail is a great idea if you love hiking and exploring. It’s a very challenging hike, yet it also takes you to one of the best places to take pictures in the Machu Picchu area. And that, combined with the numerous other incredible vistas you find along the way certainly recommends Ruta Montana Machu Picchu as one of the top routes to try out, especially if you like taking pictures and documenting your experience. Do ensure that you bring the right equipment and that you are fully prepared from a fitness standpoint, as the hike can be challenging!
