The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most famous hiking routes in the world and needs to be preserved as cultural heritage and accessing requires rigorous planning before to go.
Due to the importance of protecting the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government offers limited permits for this trek, issuing 500 permits per day, and it should be considered that these permits must also be intended for your travel team such as porters, cooks and guides. That is why it is important to book 6 months in advance.
According to the 2024 customer reports, availability for the high season was sold out 6 months in advance. Therefore, it is recommended to book at least 6 months in advance.
Another factor to consider is your travel dates, the most recommended are between the months of May to November, since it is dry season and the climate is perfect for trekking, however, it is also considered high season so you have to make a reservation.

Pick up from Cusco to Ollantaytambo station. By train you will arrive at km 104 where you will begin your hike to Puerta del Sol and then reach Aguas Calientes.

You will walk to Runkurakay, visit the archaeological site of Sayacmarca and Puyupatamarca, at the end they will walk 5 km to reach the next camp of Wiñayhuayna or Puyupatamarka.
You will walk to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) to reach Machu Picchu, after your tour in Machu Picchu you will go down to Aguas Calientes where you will take the train that will take you to Ollantaytambo where you will take the bus and return to Cusco..

Please note that your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of your arrival in Peru. If you need to renew, please book in advance and it is important to update your details to avoid interruptions and arrive on time.
Student cards are REQUIRED for student discounts. The card MUST have the month, day and year of the expiration date present on the card. Passports or online cards are not valid or accepted. Date, month and year are required. You must also have the physical card present.
Certificates of Studies, Master's Card, Doctorate and Postgraduate are not accepted for discounts to Machu Picchu.
Permits for the Inca Trail sell out quickly, especially in the high season that runs from May to November, since these are the months in which the absence of rain is felt and makes your hike a more comfortable and safe experience. We recommend you book 6 to 8 months in advance.
At Inka Altitude we offer you other alternative routes to Machu Picchu that do not require permits as strict as the hike to Salkantay or the Lares route.
Permits on the Inca Trail are issued on a specific day, if you want to change the date, you can’t do that, you have to get a new permit, the previous one is gone. Please note that according to the Peruvian government, these licenses are non-transferable.

Yes, you can add more people, but by doing so you could have complications finding availability, either in the permit for the Inca trail, in the train ticket and the entrance to Machu Picchu. Please contact to our us and we will see the options.
